The following links provide in-depth information about Malawi:

Malawi, which is one of the poorest countries in the world, was colonized by the British in 1891 and then was oppressed by a dictator starting in 1964. In 1996, it became a democracy, but is still marked by corruptness and lack of good education, healthcare and infrastructure.

Some of the tramas that citizens of Malawi live with on a daily basis include: Sixty-six percent of the people live in dire poverty; 100,000 people died of HIV, TB and malaria last year; thousands of children are left homeless because of the HIV pandemic; schools are not equipped to provide quality or even adequate education; and crime is increasing as the gap widens between the rich and the poor.

Even though the people are oppressed with the above problems, they are still a friendly people who welcome visitors in an extraordinary way.
